Chennai Celebrates Its 375th Birthday
With 2014 , marking the 375th year of the city’s birth, invitations are out to every citizen to join in the celebrations of Madras Day.
To celebrate the occasion of the 375th anniversary, Chennai week is celebrated as ‘Namma Madras Nalla Madras’ from 17th to 25th August.
The Madras Week, the event, which started off as Madras Day 11 years ago to celebrate the founding of the city on August 22, 1639, has grown into a Madras month with the festivities spread throughout August.
S Muthiah, one of the city’s chroniclers, who has been part of the event since its inception said, “We want schools, colleges, housing societies and communities to get involved in whatever way they can. This is the year to celebrate the city.”
He further added, “Participation is purely voluntary. We are just an informal group of co-coordinators trying to involve more people in the initiative.”
